Mumbai - Grand Hyatt, Friday, January 25, 2008

Event Overview

IDC India is delighted to present an exclusive roundtable meet in association with Airtel Enterprise Services, being held in the city of Mumbai (25 January 2008). The theme of this key industry meet is:

Enterprise Network and Telecom Bandwidth Management:
The Making of Enterprise 2.0

According to analysts, Enterprise Networks have rapidly grown multi-fold, both in terms of spread and complexity. CIOs and IT manager today have the bigger responsibility of supporting business growth in a continued and sustained manner, rather than just keeping pieces of IT in the enterprise connected and running.

In order to successfully rise to the occasion, the CIO will need to emerge as an enabler of the next generation of Enterprise, the Enterprise 2.0.

Towards the process, the developments that warrant his close attention include:

Rise of the Branch Offices:

  • The importance of branch offices has increased tremendously over the years, due to the need to service customers faster and in a uniform manner.

  • This is pushing more and more applications to the edge, which makes network management more complex and challenging than ever.

Outsourcing Network and Application Management:

  • The network is too complex now, and it's getting close to a nightmare, with scores of new apps popping up at a high rate. So supporting everything in house is increasingly impractical. A managed network model can be the answer.

  • Enterprises can select from these sets of service providers: IT vendors, NEPs, telcos. The challenge lies in selecting the right partner.

Supporting Mobility and Web 2.0:

  • Web-based communication tools are becoming an integral part of communications. Instant messaging has been there for long and now Web 2.0 is presenting irresistible productivity, collaboration tools.

  • Employees are quite comfortable working with multiple devices today – laptops, desktops, PDAs, smart phones, etc. – and demand access to applications over these various devices. The network should be able to support this.

Security Issues Are Too Complex:

  • Networks are becoming increasingly exposed as more external parties (e.g. suppliers and partners) are given access to applications within the enterprise network

  • Increasing mobility of workers, growth in volume of emails, adoption of instant messaging and use of P2P applications are starting to be recognized as enterprise security threats
