A "Resilient Supply Chain" – is the supply chain that has the ability to provide and maintain an acceptable level of service in spite of changes to factors affecting normal supply chain operation.
Manufacturing Today
Before the turn of the 21st century, companies used to focus internally for productivity and efficiency to compete. Innovations were geared towards cost reduction in products, processes, inventories and waste to have a competitive edge.
Today, the focus is outside the four walls of the factory. Supply chains span the globe with many suppliers; outsource manufacturers, distributors, logistics and transportation providers, original equipment manufacturers (OEM), wholesalers, and retailers all linked together, operating in a lean supply chain environment. This diverse network of participating partners makes it difficult to spot potential areas of network vulnerability. It also creates cross-boundary interdependencies, reducing the tolerance for error and unforeseen disruptions.
Supply chains and networks are also increasing in complexity, with even the smallest supplier having a significant impact on the delivery of the end product. In addition, disruptions are on the increase, with earthquakes in Asia/Pacific, SARS, the threat of an avian flu pandemic and socio-political issues all causing manufacturers to worry over the reliability of their supply chains.
In order to counter all of the above issues, companies need to build strong supply chains, while fighting the ongoing battle of cost reduction. This dilemma is causing manufacturers to focus on building ‘resilient’ supply chains. However, the ability to react quickly to unforeseen events stems largely on the availability of critical information at the right time. Hence it is not only important for manufacturers to consider the physical location of their supply chain partners, but also the information flow through all the entities of the supply chain.
Manufacturing Insights, an IDC Company, invites you to participate in a half-day conference to discuss our research findings in the Automotive and Electronics Companies, who are focusing their supply chain strategies on improving responsiveness across the supply chain in the Asia Pacific Region.
The conference is targeted at the decision makers and managers from the Manufacturing, Product Design, Supply chain, Operations and Information Technology departments of the manufacturers
The attendees will learn:
-
What is a resilient supply
chain?
-
The processes and
technologies that can be used to build
resiliency?
-
How companies have
implemented resiliency in their supply
chains?
