During 1Q 2007, the overall Client PC market grew 15.9% year-on-year (1Q 2007 over 1Q 2006) in terms of unit shipments. For the same period (1Q 2007 over 1Q 2006), desktop PC shipments showed a growth of 6.3%, while notebook PC shipments showed a growth of 73.1% (1Q 2007 over 1Q 2006).

During 1Q 2007, in terms of unit shipments of total desktop PCs, HCL narrowly led the market by recording a market share of 16.9%. In terms of unit shipments of notebook PCs during the quarter (1Q 2007) HP, Lenovo and HCL took the top three spots.

The key market highlights during the fiscal year were:

  • Overall India Client PC installed base crossed 22 million, more than doubling in three years

  • Notebook PC shipments showed significant growth, capturing 20% of the total Client PC shipments

Overall India Client PC installed base crossed 22 million, more than doubling in three years
Overall Client PC installed base in the country recorded a CAGR of 32.3% to grow from 9.5 million in 2003 to cross 22 million in 2006, thereby more than doubling in a three-year time frame.

“The country has one PC for every 50 Indians today. This represents a watershed era in the history of the Indian PC market. Post liberalisation blues have given way to a robust economy that is fuelling increasing spends on IT infrastructure by corporates and Government, and on PCs by the home and Education segments. PCs form the backbone of IT adoption,” said Kapil Dev Singh, Country Manager, IDC India.

“However, we still have miles to go as a country to evolve an ecosystem that would help to take this trend to the next level, so that the benefits of computerisation reach to the masses,” he added

Notebook PC shipments show significant growth, capturing almost 20% of total Client PC shipments
From a shipments share of 6.1% in FY 05, notebook PC shipments grew to 12.7% in FY 06 and ended FY 07 at almost 20% of the overall Client PC market (in shipment terms). This performance was contributed to a large measure by buoyant commercial notebook PC shipments that grew on account of robust demand from the large enterprise, SMB and Education segments. Consumer notebook PC shipments recorded more than 100% growth year-on-year (FY 07 over FY 06).

According to Piyush Pushkal, Manager, PC Research, IDC India, “Affordability has pulled both the supply and demand sides together for the past few quarters in the notebook PC market. This form factor is expected to grow promisingly with educational institutions as well as businesses being the major contributors.”
